FC Ingolstadt 04 was founded in 2004 when ESV Ingolstadt and MTV Ingolstadt merged to form one club. In their inaugural season, FC Ingolstadt played in the Bayernliga (4th division at the time) and missed promotion by one point, finishing 2nd behind SpVgg Bayreuth.
