When the teams were finalizing their preparations to start another edition of the Campeonato Piauiense, the second of th...e professional era, the expectation was that River would continue its string of titles. Named the Eternal Champion, the Tricolor, from 1948 to 1963, had only lost the championships of 1949 and 1957, both won by Botafogo.
It was in this context that businessman Jesus Elias Tajra took over as president of Esporte Clube Flamengo. With good administrative vision, he established the main objective: to be champion and break the rival's hegemony. He hired coach Vicente Trajano, in Fortaleza, as well as some players to reinforce the team, among them Mano and Salvador, also coming from Ceará football.
At the end of the competition, Jesus Tajra's objective had been achieved. With a brilliant campaign, Flamengo became the Piauí champion, breaking the Riverine hegemony. And it also had the two top scorers of the championship - Mano and Paulinho. A year that no red-and-black fan will forget. The competition had 57 games, with 169 goals (an average of 2.96 per game). 1964 was also the first year in which a team from the city of Floriano - Ferroviário - participated in the Piauiense Championship.
